Looked for a thread on this, but couldn't find one, so... I just got/read the last volume of IDW's Terry reprints. Aside from a little bumpiness
early on, and some slight derailment at the beginning and end of the US' involvement in WW2, it's rare that I've seen a series live up to the hype
in the way this one has. Action, humor, drama, a wonderful cast of characters... Simply incredible. I'm also glad that I didn't have to go through
what the original readers of the strip had to. Caniff had a way of leaving his characters in odd situations and then taking a year or two to get back to them.
It was maddening enough have to wait between volumes; I can't imagine what it would have been like to go for a few weeks and realizing that Caniff had
moved on to other stuff. :-) The only bad thing is that a number of characters didn't make it to the final volume and I think Caniff was a little TOO
gracious to his successor. Lots of stuff left open, which takes away from how satisfying these books are on their own. But it's certainly a testament to
his abilities that he can make you care about so many characters.
Anyone reading Checker's Steve Canyon reprints? Are they anywhere near as good? And maybe more self contained from story to story? :-)
Also, anyone know of a place online where I get a better feel for what George Wunder did with the characters? (Everything I've seen talks a little about Terry, but nothing about Pat, Burma, the Dragon Lady, etc.) Did he use the old ones or did he go off on his own direction and introduce yet another supporting cast?
