Absolute Swamp Thing?

Posts: 9673 (01/21/09 10:21 PM) Golden Age Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	Tags : absolute, swamp thing, alan moore, len wein, bernie wrightson I'm more than a little disappointed that my hoped-for Absolutes have materialized as regular-sized HC's. Someone around here mentioned recently that Omniboo material shouldn't be released as regular-sized HC's beforehand, and I'm sort of worried that I could end up buying these Swamp Thing HC's (DC Comics Classics and also the Moore series) only to see them released as Absolutes down the line and having to pay for the material twice. What's your opinion? Do these new HC's mean that we're not likely to ever see this material "Absolutely"? I really would have thought that both Wein/Wrightson Swamp Thing and Moore Swamp Thing were crying out for the Absolute treatment. (Edited thread title for brevity. Also added search tags. Posts: 2410 (01/21/09 10:40 PM) Registered Member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	I tend to think that if DC was seeing a level of interest in Alan Moore's Swamp Thing work that would support such a product, they'd have published it now, when his name recognition is likely to be as great as it ever will be. But given the sort of meandering path the material has taken even to be collected in color, in hardcover, I don't think that level of interest is there. I wouldn't hold out much hope, in either case. If DC only has regular-sized comic book art and not something that is at least as large as an absolute, then I don't think it's worth the trouble. Look at the hash that was made of the Camelot 2000 upsizing.

I don't think the process they're using would support that significantly larger size -- but then again, this strikes me as just the sort of product DC would probably try to reduce it's costs on, and would want to avoid the expense of new color seps. IF by some chance they collect the material in an Absolute format later, you can always re-sell your standard HCs and recoup some of your money. But I really don't see any logic in waiting, in hopes that a "better" format will be utilized in some future release. In much the same way DVD releases are re-configured endlessly to add more bonuses or better packaging, comic collected editions seem to lend themselves to endless revision and re-release. Life's too short to wait in hopes of getting the ultimate version somewhere down the road.

Although they seem to be covering the Swamp Thing audience with these HCs, I would imagine if sales are good enough an Absolute could happen. Thing is, Absolute no longer is the definition of quality it once was - Black Dossier cough - so I wouldn't get as excited about the prospect of Absolute Swamp Thing as I would have a year or so ago.
