I have never seen this movie, but I hear that it is laughably bad... which only serves to pique my curiosity all the more!

Laughably bad is a pretty good description. True, the story was similar to a normal comic story - however, there were several other issues with the film. Lea
Thompson and the guy playing Howard (whose name escapes me) were horrible in the movie. The acting makes you cringe. Likewise, several concepts that would work
for the comic didn't translate to the big screen. The duck costume, for instance. It would be interesting to see a CGI Howard movie - but it's hard to
suspend your disbelief with the costume. Another example is Howard playing in a rock band - funny in a comic book, simply embarrassing in a movie. I think
it's worth watching, if only to be able to say you survived it. On the plus side, because it doesn't take itself too seriously, it is not as bad as
Daredevil...

Well Howard himself should have been animated; could have been as big a classic as Roger Rabbit if they'd tried. Also, the writers should have taken some
funny pills before roasting that duck. It was almost like the creators of that film knew they were doing something stupid, and didn't care. The property
itself isn't stupid--the Howard the Duck comics themselves had a good thing going. But they didn't last long. Remember that the comic had been
cancelled many years before the movie even came out. And even in his heydey, he was more of a cult favorite character. He was never the smash commercial
success that people misremember. And when the movie came out, comics fans were saying, well gee why'd Marvel make a movie out of HOWARD when they could
have done Spider-Man, the Hulk or some other sure-fire story? The Howard film has always baffled me. Why was it made? Why was it so stupid? Why did the people
involved not take it seriously enough? And why was George Lucas, of all people, in charge of this fiasco?

Hey Skrullzy, invasion's over. Will you be returning to your "real" screenname eventually, or is Owlz a casualty of the battle?

For a George Lucas movie, this is better than all the Star Wars prequels.

Awww darn it, here I thought we were finally going to get the Spidey and Xmen cartoons from the 90's, about the only cartoons Marvel has gotten right!
Ah well more dashed hopes! |

crazy as it sounds, I am somewhat excited to hear what's going to be on this DVD...there's been some great documentary material over the past few years
for comic book movies on DVD, and I would LOVE a good doc or featurette on the history and impact of Howard.

However, I may have to buy this. I've never seen it and I'll pretty much watch anything with Lea Thompson in it. |

Howard the Duck was one of my favorite movies when I was little, LONG, LONG before I ever knew about the comic (which I have yet to read). I haven't seen
it for years, but at the time I thought it was great. I still have it, although with much wear, on a Beta tape. I'll have to dig it out and watch it again.
