I wish I was more familiar with Hama's 80s G.I. Joe work (I really do) as I grew up on his Wolverine and loved it to bits, flaws and all. Great stuff and yes there's some definite military-influenced material in there, but the less familiar you are with Wolverine, the more difficult it'll be to follow the plot if you only intend on picking up those specific issues (which get a bit messy even if you do read everything Wolvie, but hey, that's part of the fun...)

You might find the Hama/Kaare Andrews Before The Fantastic Four: Ben Grimm and Logan three issue miniseries to your liking if you're easily pleased like me. There's a G.I. Joe-ish feel to that, and it should only cost you a buck an issue or less these days. Aside from little nods to, say, Wolverine -1 (for memory) it stands alone perfectly well. Be warned that it doesn't have much in the way of fans
