What were they thinking? |

I just picked up Showcase presents Shazam! and I noticed that it ends with #33. So why didn't they include 34 and 35? It just seems silly to leave them off
with no chance of being reprinted now.

#34 is when Newton started as artist. The tone of the book greatly changed from comedic to a much more serious.
#35 ends with cliffhangers, which continued with SHAZAM!'s run moving to WORLD'S FINEST. From a story reading standpoint, it makes much more sense to save those two issues for Volume 2.

I would love to see a volume 2 of this series.

I just picked up a run of this period of World's Finest and the Captain Marvel series was a pleasant surprise. I mean, the Lt. Marvels!
The 'original' Champion! Just a wonderful series. And the Don Newton artwork was refreshing and appropriate. What a great talent lost too early. |

Oops. You're right. Sorry about that.
It was still a drastic change from Schaffenberger's style, and #34 continued into #35. That's the time when DC started ending a lot of issues with cliffhangers to keep readers coming back. Rough page count: SHAZAM! #34-35, WFINEST #253-282, ADVENTURE #491-492 are 400 pages. DCCPRESENTS #33-34, 49 and Annual 3 which are about 110 pages, and possbly SUPERMAN vs SHAZAM for 74.

The Shazam/Captain Marvel stories were the major incentive for me to complete a run of World's Finest Comics #253-282, and Adventure Comics
Digest #491 and #492 a few years ago (the two digests can be pretty hard to come by).
The fact that nearly all of them were illustrated by the great Don Newton was a bonus. I am fairly confident that these will appear in a Showcase Presents: Shazam Volume 2 sooner or later.

I think I'm still missing a few World's Finest Comics ( and afew of the later Superman Family ) from that era. They seem on the expensive side for
relative poor condition copies in the UK.

I didn't know the series continued elsewhere, so that does make sense. Hopefully we will see a Showcase Presents Shazam! vol 2 before too long.

Also on an unrelated note; has anything happened with the canceled Showcase volumes?

Paul Levitz has said publically that he hopes some of them will still be able to be published, but it's not going to happen soon.

Did he mention why they were yanked from the schedule? I'm especially surprised about Jonah Hex vol 2. Wasn't volume 1 a strong seller?

Several books were postponed after having been inadvertantly scheduled before issues of reprint payments had been settled. I suspect part of the reason some of these books have yet to be rescheduled is the difficulty of finding a place for them on a schedule that has been set up long in advance -- though it's also possible that unfavorably payment issues may cause some of the books to be abandoned entirely. |

Honestly, I could give a toss about further Shazam reprints.
EXCEPT, for the Hoppy the Marvel Bunny series. I'd love to get that reprinted. And the whole of the Power of Shazam series. What's the damn holdup with that? |

Ok, just finished the book, so what happened to Ish #25? Was it because of the Isis appearance? Wasn't she in 52? And in light of this, sohuldn't the
contents read 1-24, 26-33? Seems kinda misleading....

The backup story in #25 is still included.
The lead story could not because the 1970s version of Isis was created by Filmation -- and owned by whoever owns the TV series now (BCI)? DC created their own Isis in 52. They are very similar, but legally they are two different characters. It would have cost WAY too much to license her, just for this one short story. |
