Posts: 2891 Jan 28 08 2:36 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : mike ploog I was watching the extras on my DVD of John Carpenter's The Thing and I noticed one of my favourite masters of the macabre, Mike Ploog, did the storyboards. They showed a few samples and they were gorgeous, like fully conceived comics panels. Does anyone know if these were ever made available? If not, it's a crime. It also got me thinking about other comics artists who have done storyboards and design for films. I know Mike Mignola has done quite a bit. Anyone got any other names and preferably some samples. A quick search on google produced these samples. They're not great but they give you some idea. Posts: 478 Jan 28 08 3:12 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I first saw Ploog's storyboards for THE THING in an issue of CINEFANTASTIQUE. If you love Carpenter's version of THE THING as I do, then that issue is a must have. Jim Steranko did storyboards for Coppola's DRACULA. Jim published some of them in his brilliant autobiographical publication STERANKO: GRAPHIC PRINCE OF DARKNESS. It's still one of the best autobiographical pieces I have ever come across. In addition, Jim was the concept artist for DRACULA and the first INDIANA JONES film. Paul Gulacy did the storyboards for the MTV animated AEON FLUX. You can see some of those in my Gulacy book. Is that Steranko autobiography the one that was printed in Spain and has the text in English, as well as Spanish? Is it readily available anywhere online? Btw, I do indeed love Carpenter's The Thing. The first time I saw it was on an illegal video way back when it was first released in the early 80s. I watched it last weekend with my two boys aged 10 and 13 and they thought it was "okay" and "sorta quaint". Sigh. Never mind, we also watched Alien, which they thought was plain boring. Kids nowadaze....

Posts: 2891 Jan 28 08 4:40 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Oh I just remembered that Barry Smith did some artwork for an very early Oliver Stone film called The Hand, starring Michael Caine. He didn't do storyboards. The film was about a comic artist who loses his hand in an accident. Smith did some comic work, which was featured in the film. Anyone ever seen the film or samples of Smith's work?

Do you remember the storyboards Neal Adams did for the first Conan movie? They were never used for the actual movie but Savage Sword published them back in the day (It was in issue 60 or 61) Cheers

I know Adams wasn't involved in Van Helsing (the Huge Jackman vehicle) but at the time it seemed to me that the art direction had taken more than a few cues from Adams' Monsters book, particularly the female vampires and werewolves.

Kids nowadaze.... The issue of CINEFANTASTIQUE is Vol. 13 No. 2/Vol. 13 No. 3 (1982). Probably your best bet for finding it is ebay, a comic con or a horror movie con. It's definitely worth getting. My twelve year old son watched THE THING with me and really liked it, but he found it pretty tame. I love the Howard Hawks/Christian Nyby 1950s version too, but Carpenter's film followed William Campbell's original story WHO GOES THERE? more closely. Interesting side note: Burt Lancaster's son Bill wrote the script for Carpenter's THING, a very tight and fine script I might say. The Steranko book you're talking about is STERANKO: ARTE NOIR, which is a very nice book. I have the slipcased edition that Jim signed. STERANKO: GRAPHIC PRINCE OF DARKNESS is a comic sized magazine that Vanguard released a number of years ago. Jim wrote it, designed it and of course supplied all of the art. It's a great resource and I've told Jim numerous times that it's my single favorite biographical piece about an artist. It still might be available from Vanguard at their site. A must have for any Steranko fan! Neal did do the concept work on Stuart Gordon's H.P. Lovecraft film FROM BEYOND. Adams and Gordon are old friends. Neal also came up with the visual concepts for Gordon's sci-fi play WARP. Both of Gordon's Lovecraft films are excellent; RE-ANIMATOR and FROM BEYOND. I actually have a copy of Steranko: Graphic Prince of Darkness but the storyboards didn't ring any immediate bells. Speaking of Steranko, I always like his adaptation of Harlan Ellison's Repent Harlequin Said the Tick Tock Man. Then again, how could anyone in their right mind not like a story with a title like that, right? I have seen neither Re-Animator or From Beyond. Maybe I should check them out.

I'm pretty sure I've seen some stuff from him for movies that never got off the ground as well. That's my favorite scene from "The THing" BTW. LOOK KIDS! Posts: 1803 Jan 29 08 6:46 PM Registered Member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Somehow I never got around to seeing Re-Animator, but From Beyond was really great in an over-the-top kind of way. Best to see it with a group of friends. Both films feature Jeffrey Combs, an actor who appeared many, many times under lots o' latex in various Star Trek series. Most memorably he played Brunt and Weyoun on Deep Space Nine (he once played both roles in the same episode!). Yet another fine actor trapped in genre hell.....

Posts: 2891 Jan 30 08 3:24 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I always thought the ending of Hellboy with the huge, looming, betentacled interdimensional entity was the closest thing to Lovecraft I've ever seen. I guess Mignola did a lot of design and even storyboards for Hellboy. Anyone seen any. I know Mignola worked on the design of Disney's (I think) Atlantis, which I thought was pretty distinctive.

I am guessing there are many comics artists out there with storyboard and illustration work (portfolios and ads) apart from published comics work. I wonder if a publication about this stuff is possible or if legalities prohibit such a gathering of art, interviews, and reference works?

Posts: 6163 Feb 5 08 1:08 PM Registered Member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	deejayway, I'm pretty sure some of the BWS drawings from THE HAND were included in an article on Barry in an issue of EPIC ILLUSTRATED(can't recall the issue number). It's been over 20 years since I've seen the movie but I remember not being impressed by it at the time. I'd definitely recommend FROM BEYOND and RE-ANIMATOR(particularly in it's unrated version).

Smith drew a Conan-like character for the movie called Mandro. Posts: 2891 Feb 5 08 2:01 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I remember in the very last issue of EPIC - #33 or #34 - a couple of projects-in-progress by Barry Smith were previewed. They were in various stages of decomposition - er I mean progress - at the time (mid 80s). As far as I'm aware none of them have seen the light of day yet. Barry also announced a series called Monsters on his website with page samples. It looks great but it seems to be languishing in limbo. An there's also his near mythological Robin Hood graphic novel. Posts: 2891 Feb 5 08 5:04 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Here are the stories I was talking about, Isis (in b&w) and Revenge (in colour). Both projects near completion in 1986. If you look closely in the second image you will see that the guy's ear-ring had not been fully rendered. I think that's all that needed doing. 21 years later, no where to be seen. Talk about failing to meet a deadline. I wonder if Barry was abducted again?

He hasn't published a book in over 2 years and never posts any info about what he's doing on his website. Is he retired? Does anyone know?
