Mariah Carey is to songwriting as Gershwin is to mud wrestling. No song of hers has a melody that lasts more than five notes before dissolving into mindless trilling and octave pyrotechnics. The group did as well as could be expected with such a crappy songbook. Almost every song had a moment where someone went off pitch, but the judges allowed for that.
David Cook gets an awful lot of raves for taking every song and just converting it to a minor key and going all Pearl Jam on the festivities.
Brooke should go this week. She has the talent and piano playing ability of a high school spring musical showcase.
Carly is a broken-down nag who should be banished to the grimiest Irish pub in existance and forced to retrieve errant dart throws between serving beer in a low cut peasant blouse.
David "Archie" is the one true talent in this competition. He has time on his side to improve as an artist.

Which works perfectly for Mariah Carey. Few other living human beings can match her vocal range. When they try, they just sound, well, like the contestants did last night!

And droid, although you might not have been impressed with David Cook, I think the judges were right on about the fact that he is exactly the kind of artist who sells millions of albums right now and he is ready to start a recording career more than any of the other contestants at this point. I wasn't wild about his performance this week, but it was a lot better than last week's slip and he did have to do something with a Mariah Carey song which is the opposite of the kind of music he normally prefers, so all in all not a bad effort! Did anyone notice that Brooke started trembling halfway through her song and couldn't stop until it was over? It was very clear on a high def TV....you could see her jaw shaking as she tried to stay on pitch. Not a comfortable night for Brooke, although the judges were kind.
I wasn't impressed with David Cook's performance last night, but I do agree that he's ready to step into a recording studio right now. At this point, he's got to be considered the odds-on favorite to win this season's competition.

I didn't notice Brook trembling but perhaps the competition is taking its toll on her. I am sure missing her sister's wedding last weekend could not have been easy for it. As for her losing the piano, I don't know - it seems she feels better singing when she has that crutch. When she just sits or stands and sings, well... she seems to have a harder time. Like Droid, I once had her locked for top three but I am thinking she could easily go sooner than that.
The thing about Brooke and her piano is that when it works, it's magical. When it doesn't work, is disasterous. No in between.

I think it says that most current acts aren't writing their own material and depend on the mixing board to turn out a marketable album.
