Hi. A topic near to my heart! It was the thought of Tbolts that got me into binding. Here is my progress. I'm prepping the extra materials for volumes 3 - 5 now.

I have actually mapped this out pretty thoroughly and it largely depends on how in depth you want to go, but off hand, I'd say all you still NEED are the Captain America/Citizen V Annual 1998 (reveals the 2nd Citizen V to be female, and Zemo + Techno break up), the Avengers issues from The Nefaria Protocols(vol 3 #32-34, possibly 31), and the first Citizen V and the V Batallion LS (#1-3 - resolves the Scourge plot and reveals Zemo is still alive).

I've only done the first 2 volumes but I have the whole series mapped out to vol 5. I've chosen to go the expansive route and include a lot of stuff that needn't neccessarily be included. Here are my maps:

I struggled with Avengers Forever but it gets mentioned and alluded to several times in the series, so I decided to include it. Bonus Materials section includes a collage of panels from Avengers issues showing Hawkeye deciding to lead the Tbolts.

The Nefaria Protocols tpb is kinda scarce - if you want to use the issues, that's Tbolts 42, Avengers 32, Tbolts 43, Avengers 33, Tbolts 44, Avengers 34. The tpb includes Avengers 31 but I find it unneeded for a Tbolts compilation

vol 5 - Becoming Heroes, Becoming Villain

Avengers/Thunderbolts 1 - 6

Could use the tpb instead of the mini series issues. There are alot of cameos and alternate covers and stuff that I've included in the backs of my volumes but this covers the main parts of the books.

I've thought about a 'Before the Thunderbolts' series of books but I always get bogged down on how to present the stories, how inclusive to be, and who to feature (just the original team or Radioactive Man and Speed Demon too? What about Man Killer?) I've just resolved to think about it later. I've also been considering a Baron Zemo volume instead . . .

any thoughts?

Yeah, like I said - I really wanted to not do it, but I wanted the complete Tbolts experience in one set of books and I felt I really did need that story to set up things like Hawkeye bringing Songbird to an Avenegrs mission and wondering why (Avengers 2000 - even references Avengers Forever in the caption). Also, the Captain Marvel / Songbird thing that really kicks into gear in vol 3 and 4 as I have them. A lot is built on Avengers Forever, in terms of Songbird's development, on up through to the new series.

Actually, no. It WAS printed and hit the stands before Tbolts #1 (I think Tales of the MU may have, too), and it was written as a teaser for Tbolts #1, but Tbolts #1 is their first public appearance as a team and fits chronologically ahead of both Hulk and Tales. Some of the ordering I took some liberties with, such as placing Avengers 2000 right after Tbolts 2000 since its a continuation but my online resource for Tbolts continuity says it comes later.

Here is the excellent online guide that helped me figure out the order I would use - Also tipped me off to some random cameos I had missed.

You guys have inspired me to wrap up the last of my projects and ship out these books to David! I am putting the finishing touches on the Tbolts related Bullpen Bits now.
