The primary reason why Rome fell was that the military strength of the Empire was continually deflected to civil warfare after the assassination of Caracalla in AD 217. Emperors were installed by the soldiers and deposed by rivals in musical chair fashion thereafter. Stemming barbarian invasions would have been just another day's work for the legions of Rome if other legions led by rival generals had not been their main threat to survival.
Of course I also wonder whether it's strictly coincidental that the Empire didn't continue to prosper or even last much longer after Constantine made Christianity the official religion. So do many historians.

Me I fear what the neo-Soviet revanchists have in mind under Vladimir Putin. That's the main threat to continued peace in Europe and in the North Atlantic region as a whole.
