While doing our latest episode of "Imperius Rex" podcast about Prince Namor on Mediafire and YourList.com, we discovered something disturbing about the Marvel Masterworks reproduction of Tales to Astonish #82.
The twelve page installment "The Power of Iron Man" appears both in Sub-mariner volume 1 and Iron Man Masterworks #65. But the artwork for the first two pages, while clearly by Gene Colan, has been altered!
Lots of unnecessary water droplets have been added to the figure of Namor on the splash page and second page, as well as the elimination of one of the production credits! Artie Semik is not credited with the lettering in the Sub-Mariner Masterworks.
Also the fine Dick Ayers inking is now thicker and muddied, as if someone decided to spot blacks for shading. Perhaps the changes were made by a reprint editor along the way?
We have now confirmed the various places it has been reprinted, like Marvel Super-Heroes #37 (July 1973) and Iron Man Special #1 (August 1970). The changes appear in MSH #37, but not IM Special #1.
But we are left with the question, why changes or alterations in one volume, but not in the other. (Frankly, I prefer the unaltered version found in Marvel Masterworks #63 "Iron Man"...
