I think it's what you just said, European audicences in general appreciate more classical comics than in the USA. I am pretty sure in countries like France or Italy print runs for these books are even higher than in Spain.

I'm french and when I came in Spain i was astonished by all the comics you have in spanish. (Italy has got lots of translation version of US Comics)
In france we have more and more actual comics but it s more difficult to have old ones.
In spain you had an essential collection with Dracula for example taht we have not. And i don't think we will have MOKF.
these old series were translated in the 70-80's (not the gene day run for MOKF) but Dracula was not reprinted.
With the movies we had new Fury by Steranko, Doc Strange By Ditko that never were reprinted since the 70's. And we lack a lot of Marvel Comics from the 80's because one French publisher went out of busineness at the time (or Howard the duck from Gerber.. we have only the Hachette Marvel Graphic Novel collection one in french).
Then, for books with small print runs (like omnibuses) we tend to have them for 65-70€ (Alias, Clone saga, Atlantis Attack)...
But in France, the majority love hardcover.
For your thought about distribution, it could be.. last time i went in portugal they had brazilian TPB in bookstore. And French edition can be found in Belgium for example.
