Hawkman was in Flash Comics #1 which had a cover date of January 1940. Red Raven #1 had a cover date of August 1940. So it's possible someone was "inspired". A banner like that sure inspires hope that we might indeed be seeing GA Rarities! Unless of course today is April Fo...oh...

Hawkman was "lifted" from the Hawkmen of Flash Gordon for the original source of all those bird brained superheroes that followed.

I would've expected Revive to awaken with a jolt the moment JDH put this up.

VisualFiction wrote:But Hawkman was the first winged superhero, right? He seems qualitatively different from the Gordon Hawkmen, if only due to his solo-ness and civilian ID. So Raven wouldn't be a direct lift from Gordon but from Hawkman albeit by way of the more relatively remote Gordon "ancestry"? (sorry) Not trying to split hairs, but if superheroes are a subgenre of SF. And thanks for the Raymond remind! Another question, Were there any other winged Marvel heroes between Red Raven and Angel.

(No cape. And his wings were PINK. ::sigh:: Some Bund member of a colorist was likely to blame for that. The Nazis hated RR!)
Serious question, Was RR a Hawkman imitator and was he the first?
(Centaur's Air Man debuted in Keen Detective Comics #23, also dated Aug. 1940.)
(Bird Man appeared in Weird Comics 1 (April 1940)-4 though I don't know if he had wings or was a glider like Captain Midnight and Black Condor.)
Is the illo by Louis Cazeneuve.
(Yes, IMS.)

My name is Oedi and I soar amidst the stars far from the planet of my birth. I guess this starship is the closest thing I've got to a home now, for I am a refugee and an outlaw. Vanth Dreadstar, Syzygy Darklock, Willow 327, Rainbow and Skeevo are my family. We are revolutionaries. Our goal? To bring an end to the 200 year old war between the Instrumentality and the Monarchy!
