Buscema skimped on a lot of stuff, but that doesn't mean he was over-rated. When lay-outing for competent delineators, he put in everything necessary for effective storytelling.
Buscema was the consummate professional, more intent on making a decent livelihood than creating lasting comic art.He managed to both, but his achievements would've been even greater had he been in the circumstances that allowed him to take more time and ink more of his work.Sadly, time was a luxury comic artists with a family like Buscema, Kirby and Colan, could ill afford.
That's one of the reasons Gil Kane was allegedly so hostile to young Turks like Barry Smith, because they could take the time to lavish so much attention on their work, which Kane reputedly felt made him and others look bad.If you nitpickers want a source for that possibly apocryphal story, I refer you to 'A Look Back', the 70 Berni Wrightson career retrospective, which is the last place I read it. But I've read (variations of) that story elsewhere, probably/possibly in CBA.
Irony and subtly are the first casualties in the eternal battle of wits between people divided by a common language. So read between the lines or you'll fall through the cracks...

While Neal Adams inking style is certainly compelling to fans, his actual skill in telling a story are pretty horrible. IF you take his pages as a whole and look at the flow of the artwork from panel to panel, it's often a jumbled mess. Neal Adams is also given the most credit for the smallest volume of work produced. BWS might compete in this category (volume to reputation) but at least Smith came up with a unique style all his own. Adams style if pretty much derived from serious newspaper strip artists and the Giordano/Colletta school of scratchy line inking.

prioritized Best from the Silver Age...
Kirby/Sinnott
Buscema/Klien
Romita
Colan/Palmer
Adams
Ditko
Steranko
Actually, Silver Age wise, I think most of the Marvel artists were under-rated, not over-rated... like Severin, Everett, and Heck

Steranko- great design sense, but not a great artist when it comes to sequential story telling. Stunning cover artist, though. Ditko- I'll hear cries of sacrilege over this, but I don't think he's a great artist. A genius when it comes to design and storytelling, though. Most underrated- John Severin- simple page layout and great storytelling. As a draftsman, he's an artists artist.

Now that I've discovered the ones that weave stories the best for me, I can really see what's lacking in those who can only draw panel after panel of static poses. Story telling turns out to be more than half the battle when it comes to differentiating the "good' artists from the 'bad'.
