From what I gather, Sue wasn't herself when she took on that costume. She was under the influence of the villainous Malice persona. I wasn't reading the book at the time. Was that the original intent when she adopted that costume, or just a later retcon to explain it away?

However, even after the Malice storyline had run its course she continued to wear the costume for something like 2-3 years.

Actually as soon as Sue realized she was under the influence and defeated Malice the costume was changed. No retcon. It was an actual storyline and it made sense.

That doesn't really answer the question I asked. Was it established from the time that the costume was introduced that it was a Malice manifestation, or did readers just find that out when Sue did?

It's like people complaining about the Spider-Mobile without understanding the context.

Readers did not know exactly what was going on when the costume appeared but either right at the time or just before/after there were hints that Sue wasn't herself. I'm pretty sure other characters were also questioning why Sue was wearing that. Reed was presumed dead at the time so the reader and the characters were misdirected into thinking that Sue was just angry about Reed's "death." At least that's how I remember it from two readings.

Plus it was so lazy after Dark Phoenix and crazy Scarlet Witch. We should consider ourselves lucky that She-Hulk & Wonder Woman escaped the same fate.

I don't think DP or SW had costumes anything like that of Malice. Just remembered the other thing about the first Sue/Malice storyline was that the rest of the FF weren't supposed to know who she was so she had to look very different. Also it showed how powerful she was, something Byrne did a lot. She'd been a sreaming cipher for a lot of the previous 20 years.
