It was in a planned crossover between AMAZING SPIDER-MAN and NOVA.There was a Nova/Thing team-up that appeared in MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE ANNUAL #3. I suppose it's possible that story may have been intended for a NOVA ANNUAL, especially since the creative team was Marv Wolfman and Sal Buscema.
