Duke University (Durham, North Carolina) and Mercer University (Macon, Georgia) are both celebrating the admission of their first black students 50 years ago. These are private, church-related colleges that integrated voluntarily, not because of any court order. They waited until fall 1963 to integrate because the state laws in North Carolina and Georgia would have taken away their tax-exempt status as private universities if they had integrated earlier.

He use to deal in Golden Age comics back in the seventies but soon got out of it until this last week when a woman came into his store with a box of late thirties/early forties (with a few late forties) comics. I would guess that only one third were complete. The other two thirds had pages cut out from only three or four to most of the book. We both speculated that maybe these were returns (requiring usually the removal of the covers) but the most exciting thing was the condition of these comics. I would swear that almost all of them looked like they could have been purchased off the rack yesterday. There were little, if any, stress to the spines, no tears or cracks, no musty smell to the comics, and the colors were just as bright and clear as the day they were produced. It left us to wondering just how and where they were stored all these years. Among the few complete comics was a copy of Fawcett's Captain Midnight #1 (which was more in good condition), a Hillman Air Fighters comic, and what I would consider a near mint copy of Scribbly #2. But what was heartbreaking were all the comics with the missing pages. A considerable number of Funnies, True, and Classic Illustrated among others. Unfortunately there were no Timely and only a couple of Scribbly books representing DC. I loaned him a two year old copy of the Buyer's Guide that I had and it will take him some time to evaluate them all for completeness...but..if you could have only seem these covers. My Gosh! It was liking stepping back into time, they were so new looking! I'll keep everyone posted with what he intends to do with them. They sell their books on ABE but they usually don't use the internet. Yes, this was an early Christmas present for me. I got him a hundred Golden Age bags and boards so he gave me a copy of Scribbly #9 that was missing the last three pages with only a slight roll in the spine. Thought that I would share this with everyone.
