I'm rereading a lot of the DC stuff I first read back in the '80s, including Swamp Thing, George Perez' Wonder Woman, and other post-Crisis stuff. (Millennium TPB and Batman: A Death In The Family, to be exact.) One thing I'm really looking forward to doing is reading up through the Superman: Man of Steel trades. I figured I'd start with The World of Krypton trade to kick off my Byrne-era reading.
I remember hating this comic when I was 17. I really enjoyed it now that I'm 41. Hmm...
I guess it's the sophisticated sci-fi touches by Byrne. The ethics of human cloning is a pretty hard-hitting subject and not one I've seen too often in comics, at least not done in such a meditative, philosophical standpoint. Mignola's art was a little rough. His layouts were exciting and design sense was gorgeous, but his faces were inconsistent and often weird looking. Mignola's certainly not known for "pretty", but his work here showed a talent in development. He was certainly coming into his own, though.
The "Fabulous World of Krypton" backups from the '70s and '80s Superman were a mixed bag, but were mostly fun stories by some grade-A talent. (Gray Morrow and Mike Kaluta? Wasn't expecting that!)
Has there been any thought of reprinting the rest of the "Fabulous World" backups? How about the 3-issue mini by Paul Kupperberg and Howard Chaykin? An expanded edition of The World of Krypton might be a good book.
