Storage Bins For Collected Editions?

Posts: 10789 Dec 2 12 1:42 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None I'm gonna have to put some collected editions into storage for a few months at minimum, perhaps longer, and I want to do so in a way that I get the books out of storage in the same condition I put them in. I also don't want to spend a zillion dollars on it, natch. Right now I'm considering plastic storage bins so they can resist any moisture, dust, and/or bugs during their time in purgatory. For the hardcovers, I'd layer the bottom with bubble wrap and stack them with spines on the bottom bearing the weight. I went to Wal-Mart to look for bins that would accommodate this kind of project and despite their wide selection they didn't have anything that was perfectly aligned with my plan. Anyone have any recommendations, success stories, or tales of what not to do in this situation? This forum has a website! If I interpret "spines down" correctly, then I have rarely stored books that way - but have had problems with storing books upright (AKA normally) and also with stacking them flat. Any kind of vertical stacking can cause problems if the binding isn't perfect or if there's room for the books to tilt/fall. (Ironically, of course, if you pack them really tightly to avoid falling, they can be problematic to remove...) Stacking is far less of a problem, although some people would advise for - or against - stacking them with spines on alternating sides. On the plus side, the slight thickness difference is evened out and the stack is more stable, on the downside that thickness/protruberance difference can mar surrounding covers if the weight of books presses one into another. And don't stack different sized books on top of one another unless they are at the top of a stack: you can get impressions of smaller books in larger books' covers... (Also, paperbacks stack vertically in seemingly any way - spine up/down, 'normal' - can, in my experience, warp and become wavy. I don't know precisely why - humidity, weight on top of a box - but it can be a problem.)

Posts: 170 Dec 4 12 10:35 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	If this is going into a temp/humidity controlled storage locker you should be able to get by with Long boxes (Regular sized for trades, Magazine Sized for Omnibuses). I'd store them flat, laying down. If they are going into a shed, garage or other non-controlled area it'd be better to sell them off and pocket the money. Odds of the books being affected (and devalued) are highest in those cases so why not just get the $$ for books you arent going to be accessing to read anyway. When you want to rebuild your library down the road you have the funds to repopulate.

I ended up just putting the books in regular comic and cardboard boxes. So, when the storage unit flooded, I lost at least 100 books (mostly manga and TPB's -- I wisely put the more expensive HC's on top!). I ended up re-boxing everything and putting them in plastic garbage bags that were taped shut. Less expensive than buying plastic bins, but probably not as fool proof.

I've seen collections (comics/and books) that were stored in plain paper grocery bags for 30 years come out perfectly fine. And I've seen comics that were stored in comic bags and boards or plastic bins that looked like absolute crap due to water or insect damage. Comic bags and plastic bins keep moisture out, but they can also trap moisture in. I mean, it doesn't matter much what the books are in, if the unit floods (or there is a fire). And not all floods come from the ground - sometimes the roof leaks or the plumbing explodes. Here's my personal recommendation - and it's worked through 3 moves and short term storage (during my last move, all my books were in storage for 5 months). - Get a bunch of sturdy cardboard boxes. I highly recommend the Diamond boxes that new comics come in every week. Check with your LCS on Tuesday. These boxes are perfect for regular sized comics / books, and they're thick. Pack everything solidly, stacked. (Stacked storage is fine for anything less than a decade.) Just don't stack the boxes too high (as you don't want the bottom boxes to get crushed). At a minimum, put the boxes on a pallet to raise them off of the ground. And get insurance. A short term insurance policy could cost less than a Omnibus, but would totally be worth it if something happened. I just read the first four issues of Hawkeye on my computer screen, and it was pretty awesome. I miss the feel of paper in my hand, but I totally get the storage solution. Gormuu, I guess it really depends on how long? Months? Years? Liquor store boxes with a parchment paper lining? Bubble wrap in plastic Rubbermaid containers? Up off the ground is a good idea, whether it's a bunch of garage shelving or even just pallets. My buddy had a pallet brought into his basement in the furnace room, and stacked his long boxes 5 tall, 6 deep against an interior wall, before he had his "comics closet" custom built. Posts: 169 Dec 4 12 12:39 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	let me second the Diamond box idea. Free and sturdy. I used them to move and now to store. Also good for spare cardboard to make a 'book burrito' when mailing off books, that is, if you ever sell any.
