Posts: 450 Nov 28 12 6:03 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None I just learned at the Comics Journal website that Manuel "Spain" Rodriguez, underground cartoonist, has passed away. There are others more knowledgeable than I about his art and his career in art and underground comics, all I can say is that I enjoyed his work in the various undergrounds I'd occasionally buy through the years. A job well done to Spain, my condolences to his family. Allen Smith

Posts: 357 Nov 29 12 6:32 PM Modern Age Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I have always liked his work, ever since I saw him in underground comics in the early 70s, and somehow (no Internet back then) I found out he was from Buffalo, not far from where I was growing up in Jamestown, NY. He even had a big splash panel of bikers in a bar in Jamestown in one of his comics. So even though I'm not a biker cartoonist hippie, I always felt a kinship. Apparently there's current a show of his work at an art gallery in Buffalo. I guess he lived long enough to she that come to pass. Ride on, Spain!

Posts: 627 Nov 30 12 8:25 AM Silver Age Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I received the announcement from Dan Fogel (Hippy Comix Inc. and Spain's rep I believe) 2 days ago. Spain apparently passed a few days ago after a long illness. Dan didn't specify for the sake of privacy. There are a lot of underground comix maniacs very sad, like myself, with the passing of Spain. He was like a found father for undergrounds, getting his start in the 1960's in NYC newspapers like the East Village other. He was a core member of artists who contributed to ZAP Comics, and that's not an easy club to crack. He is already sorely missed, Jack D.
