Having just seen the Avengers movie for a third time the thought occurred to me that there are enough superhero movies available and a lot more to come that it might be an option to give up reading comics and just follow the movies instead.
I've just looked at my Blu-Ray collection of superhero movies to find I have the following:
Batman - 6 movies
Captain America
Daredevil
Electra
Fantastic Four - 2 movies
Ghost Rider
Green Lantern
Hellboy - 2 movies
Hulk - 2 movies
Iron Man - 2 movies
Sin City
Spider-Man - 3 movies
Spirit
Superman - 5 movies
Thor
Watchmen
Wolverine
X-Men - 4 movies
A total of 36 movies. I know there are others out there like Punisher etc, but they are not of interest to me.
Add to that those already in the pipeline for this year i.e. Avengers, Ghost Rider 2, Superman, Batman & Spiderman and it takes the total to over 40.
I also foresee with the success of the Avengers movie an increase in the frequency of future superhero releases. Marvel seem set to release two movies a year and it's not to far a stretch to expect another four from other companies. Who would bet against the likelihood of the following movies outside of Disney/Marvel coming over the next two year:
X-Men : First Class II
Amazing Spider-Man II
Superman II ?
JLA
Fantastic Four
Daredevil
Wolverine II
Sin City II
At six movies a year and a backlist of 40 plus titles there is almost enough there to satisfy anyones need for a superhero fix. The movies are also their own stand alone Universe i.e. neither 616 or Ultimate and in the case of Marvel the origins etc are there in the backlist of movies.
I'm not really serious about abandoning comics quite yet, but it just struck me that if I wanted to it would be possible.
What do you think?
