Posts: 3420 Feb 18 12 7:37 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None I'm trying to bid on some comics and when I try to place a bid, the seller has made it that I need to link my Paypal account to my eBay account. My question is, what are the negatives in doing that? I know that it would allow me to bid on more auctions, but I don't want to do something that's gonna annoy me later.

Posts: 8690 Feb 18 12 8:34 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	My understanding is that the same company owns both PayPal and eBay, and the two should be linked automatically. If you're going to buy on eBay, go ahead and link them. Both have annoying features, linked or not.

Posts: 8475 Feb 18 12 9:37 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	IIRC E-bay made it a requirement that all sellers accept Paypal (since they would also get a cut of Paypal fees now). As a buyer, it's mostly to your advantage. You can link your credit card to your Paypal account and pay that way as well. Both Paypal and e-bay have buyer protection policies (almost to the detriment of sellers). The one disadvantage is if you plan to have items shipped to different addresses (i.e. to your work or if you are buying them as gifts for others) since some sellers will only ship to the address linked to your Paypal account.

And I can confirm your statement about buyer protection being a detriment to sellers. I do a lot of business on ebay and I've gotten to the point where if a buyer is going to just commit outright fraud or use feedback for extortion I just give them what they want. I had one buyer threaten to "kick my a$$" if I didn't let him keep the product and refund him all his money. I called the police and filed a complaint against this guy after he called me more than 10 times over 2 days, but ebay/paypal did nothing to help me. I got a negative feedback (my first ever) and the buyer got his money refunded (there was nothing wrong with the item the guy just has some insane hatred of FedEx, which is my clearly stated shipping method). Sure I could get a judgement and have the feedback removed but it's just not worth the time and effort. The problem for sellers is that ebay is the only game in town, and they know it. Scott F

I've sold and bought on eBay for almost 12 years now and have used Paypal, so that's not a big deal, but I've never linked my account. I've noticed lately that some sellers have started requiring that. Wasn't sure if there was going to be something later that would come back to bite me.

Scott F Which is why after over 10 years on ebay I stopped listing items for sale. It was more of a garage sale type of thing for me. It hampers me now as I'm thinking seriously about divesting myself of most of my comics and my options are few. "The world's going to change tonight, doctor, I'm glad you'll be able to watch it. Posts: 1925 Feb 20 12 2:39 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The garage sale thing is what ebay was built on. I started on ebay in 1998, and it was for me the best thing ever about the internet. As a collector I was finding things I had been looking for for years. I remember in my first week I bought 9 of the 10 hardcovers in my top 10 want list, and found the last item a few weeks later. It was the wild west. I got burned about 5 times over the years but the fees were much smaller. Anyone else remember when paypal was "x.com" and completely free? Unless you're an established seller on ebay you have to jump through flaming hoops to sell your stuff. Yes, it keeps out the scam artists but it also keeps new sellers away. In the long run this will lead ebay down the path of atrophy as the power sellers like me do their absolute best to do as much business off ebay/paypal as possible. I see ebay getting closer and closer to becoming Amazon (which treat their sellers ever worse). Within the next few years I think we'll see more auction sites that cater to certain markets like comics, and I hope someone else will create a site that genuinely competes with ebay. I think a site that allows auctions only and not huge stores like buy.com could succeed. Scott F
