I just picked up the first 42 issues, complete blind buy, and was reading through old threads. I'm thinking of binding them for my first try, but I don't want to waste money on mediocrity. Does it get better post-Davis too? Post Davis, you've got the Scott Lobdell issues which I couldn't stand. Then comes Warren Ellis' run from 83-103 which is quite enjoyable. Then the series ends with Ben Raab who's okayish but leans toward mediocre. The last two issues with Captain Britain's wedding were good, though. Cards on the table though, I'm a big fan of Captain Britain. So how I felt about the Excalibur writers were purely dependant on how they treated Brian Braddock. So for me the best runs were Alan Davis followed by Warren Ellis followed a very distant third by Claremont (who gave CB prominence but treated him not particularly well).

SamyMerchi wrote:"Didn't you bind all of Excalibur?" If you want a complete series to bind that has no weak periods at all, then Excalibur is not the right choice. Excalibur has three strong periods and three weak to mediocre periods. Claremont/Davis - strong #27-41 - weak to mediocre Davis/Davis - strong Lobdell - weak Ellis - strong Raab - weak to mediocre Nonetheless, I love having the complete series in a matching format.

I'm mostly satisfied with the end product though I'd do a few things differently, mostly leave out gluebound prestige formats like "Mojo Mayhem" since they necessitate a lower quality binding when you have gluebounds in the mix. I have no regrets. It sure makes the floppies a lot prettier on the bookshelf.

I think I'm going to stick it out with Uncanny, X-Factor, and New Mutants. I've actually been enjoying the supporting cast of X-Factor quite a bit...Rusty, Skids, Boom-Boom, Artie, and Leach are a fun crew to have bouncing around the stories. And I've been waiting years to read these early Archangel stories. I even enjoyed the Bird-Brain arc in New Mutants, so we'll see how that title goes from here on out. There's a two issue "X-Men: Spotlight on the Starjammers" mini popping up in my reading list soon...anyone know if it's worth reading?
