My name is Oedi and I soar amidst the stars far from the planet of my birth. I guess this starship is the closest thing I've got to a home now, for I am a refugee and an outlaw. Vanth Dreadstar, Syzygy Darklock, Willow 327, Rainbow and Skeevo are my family. We are revolutionaries. Our goal? To bring an end to the 200 year old war between the Instrumentality and the Monarchy!

Chris Claremont is a far superior writer to Marv Wolfman, despite the latter's obvious love for Burroughs and sincere effort to mimic ERB's writing style. To be honest, I've never really cared much for anything Wolfman's written outside of TOMB OF DRACULA. George Perez carried most of the weight on NEW TEEN TITANS. JOHN CARTER really improves once Wolfman is gone.
Yes, the art is better on the Wolfman run, but Ernie Colon and Mike Vosburg do serviceable work. But oh how looking at the covers John Byrne and George Perez did for the series makes we wish we got a couple of issues or at least an annual by one of those two!

The art didn't help elevate it either.Mind you, I'm not putting down your appreciation. We don't all have to like or dis-like the same material. I'll just say it seemed like one of Claremont's weaker stories. He does try to do something interesting things with Dejah Thoris but I suspect editorial had him retreat from the potentially scandalous treatment of Thoris. Still, he does a great job of portraying Dejah's sacrifice of her dignity as a noble act, not a lecherous or weak one. I agree about the Byrne and Perez suggestion. Frank Miller's fill in looked excellent. Bob Layton would have given us a really fine story too. I've seen better from Colan and Vosburg. I don't think the later had a great inker on the series. Colon at least has some interesting layout and design ideas.Anyway, thanks again Sentry.

What do you guys think about Claremont having Dejah Thors as the love slave to Chan Tomar, to save John Carter? Does anyone know if the ERB estate was upset at this, or was Marvel, or did he get good feedback? It was a thought-provoking scenario. Just wondering if he caught any flak....

There's all kinds of that type of innuendo in the books...fair maidens and princess kidnapped and held in the clutches of evil depraved Jeddaks and so forth. There's nothing overt or graphic (espscially compared to today...see A Song of Ice and Fire books by Martin) but it's implied...exactly the way Claremont did it. Wolfman's writing I found too forced and wordy for a comic. And I thought he made Carter far too angry all the time (almost homicidal) and more obsessed with Dejah than in love. Reading Carter under Wolfman you get almost a kind of creepy possessive stalker vibe from John. I don't recall Carter being quite that...intense in the books. Passionate, yes. Re-reading the series in the Omnibus, it was a brief of fresh air when Claremont came on. The stories flowed so much faster and were far more enjoyable.
The third fell within ten seconds after the second, and the last lay dead upon the bloody floor a few moments later. They were brave men and noble fight- ers, and it grieved me that I had been forced to kill them, but I would have willingly depopulated all Barsoom could I have reached the side of
