They've been saying that Thunderbolts is really great now. Is anyone reading this? If so, what's a good jumping on point? I really don't want to start at #1 and work my way up.

My name is Oedi and I soar amidst the stars far from the planet of my birth. I guess this starship is the closest thing I've got to a home now, for I am a refugee and an outlaw. Vanth Dreadstar, Syzygy Darklock, Willow 327, Rainbow and Skeevo are my family. We are revolutionaries. Our goal? To bring an end to the 200 year old war between the Instrumentality and the Monarchy!

I think the recent Jeff Parker run has been pretty great, although the recent Fear Itself arc was a bit of a letdown. I also dig Kev Walker's artwork, although with his rough-hewn style his women aren't the prettiest, and one of the hallmarks of Thunderbolts for me has always been pretty Songbird.

And yes, Walker's artwork is more interesting than pretty, but I do really like it!

I haven't read the most recent few issues (which are likely the ones being recommended to you), but I know that #163 was the debut of the new team and billed on the cover as "1st issue of a new era!", so it's probably as good a jumping on point as any. I've been reading for about 50-60 issues now, up to #162 and I would definitely say it's maintained a decent level of quality. My biggest issue with the book is that it almost always stars D-List characters and they usually don't stay around long enough for me to really care about them. I have an affinity for D-Listers (X-Factor has been one of my favorite books since it was revived), but they take longer to really develop strong feelings for than someone you've read in a million other titles and have some pre-conceived opinions on.

I have enjoyed the Thunderbolts off/on, but really found Jeff Parker on "red" Hulk and Thunderbolts top notched and less compressed style was good.Where is started waning for me in the issues prior to Fear Itself (besides the re-work of the Man-Thing purpose stand alone issue). It seemed like a stretch to make "Beta/Gamma" teams of mostly D-listed Thunderbolts as it smacked too much like the kind of thing readers got with Alpha Flight and other books to increase the number of charactes in teams per se. But for me its been trade waiting on the Jeff Parker Thunderbolts and Hulk.

I'd never heard of most of them and hadn't read any other books that prominently featured the characters, even for a guest appearance. Luke Cage is obviously not a D-lister, but he's an exception to the rule and didn't actually appear in the book all that much. What I was really saying is that my only complaint is the constantly rotating cast of characters, because it feels like every time I start caring about a character I wasn't previously familiar with, they're replaced with a new one who I know nothing about. It's a small complaint, as I've been really enjoying the book since Ellis' run a few years back.
