My name is Oedi and I soar amidst the stars far from the planet of my birth. I guess this starship is the closest thing I've got to a home now, for I am a refugee and an outlaw. Vanth Dreadstar, Syzygy Darklock, Willow 327, Rainbow and Skeevo are my family. We are revolutionaries. Our goal? To bring an end to the 200 year old war between the Instrumentality and the Monarchy!

At a budget of over 300 million, it would need at least that to break even and with these numbers (52M) opening it doesn't look like it will begin to have a chance. Don't look for a sequel any time soon on this one, which is a shame because I think the sequel could be a much better movie than this was. I agree with others on the board that it was burdened with the usual origin baggage and that can bog down a first installment. I also think that superhero "burnout" is starting to set in with these movies. An exception will be The Dark Knight Rises and (hopefully) Avengers.

Quote:“Green Lantern,” which was once in development as a Jack Black comedy, is Warner’s first superhero release since making management changes at DC last year and more deeply integrating it into the studio’s development machinery. The pressure is intense not only because of the studio’s desire to compete with Marvel. The Harry Potter franchise ends in July, and Warner’s plan for replacing those riches turns squarely on DC characters. “Green Lantern” cost an estimated $300 million to make and market — on par with similar moves but still expensive. And buzz has been a problem. Although fans now seem to be on board, an early trailer was poorly received. Endquote

Green Lantern's Saturday number is $17.1 million (compared to X-Men's 19.7m with a lower opening day and established fanbase). Father's Day softened the Sunday drop and will get it over 50m for the weekend, but there's no way it comes close to finishing north of X-Men in the long run. It's going to tank next week. Sub-20m is very possible. It'll be lucky to finish around 120-130m. Not a good return for a 300m investment. Don't expect a sequel, kids.
