This morning I visited a small local bindery about fifteen miles from my house, in Brisbane CA, which is a small city adjacent to San Francisco. They've done comics in the past (in fact, the man I talked to, Joel Martinelli, told me that the first things he ever bound were his own comics as a kid), and seem enthusiastic about doing them again.
The price is right, $15 per volume for the basic, stripped down model, more for various trimmings. Plus no shipping charges, since I can drop off and pick up--they may even deliver, since they do regular deliveries to libraries in the area.
I showed him samples of various things I'd had done in various materials at LBC, and he said that they either had or could get all of them.
I left several volumes with them, and was promised a three week turnaround. I'm really eager to see what they can do, and I'll keep you posted.
None of this means that I'll abandon Jim Jasek--as far as I'm concerned he's still my primary supplier, but I need to have some books done before San Diego, and it's always good to have a reserve plan anyway.
