I wonder if one of the early 1960s hospital dramas like Dr. Kildare, Ben Casey or The Nurses ever had an episode in which the medical science of the era utilized a kind of mask to temporarily protect someone with severe facial injuries-- not to disguise them as someone else, obviously, but simply to help them cope psychologically. There's probably a fascinating history about what could actually be done-- in a limited way of course-- with such early prototype latex masks, perhaps even in real-life espionage.

Did they ever do things like that in soap operas?
