And I'm pretty sure all this backstory wasn't planned at the time of X-Men #1 and he could actually have been intended to be close to Jean's age.

Sorry, not buying it. I wouldn't recommend trusting Xavier *or* Magneto. If your justification for Xavier being a hero is that he isn't a terrorist, then that's a pretty low bar. (In fact, I almost qualify by those standards! )How do you consider Xavier a terrorist?

Not to mention other out-dated sexual politics going on in other books (e.g., Daredevil, Iron Man, Thor). Maybe they should do a Mad Men style series about early Marvel

Not straight out of school, necessarily, but a highly motivated young teacher who tended to come off older than his years because of his experiences and intelligence. To me, Magneto has always been far more interesting as a "Malcolm X" counterpoint to Xavier's "MLK" then just another stock super-villain bent on world domination." Same. I think that's (to me) the most compelling way to write them that I've come across.

He’s my favorite version of Xavier! Patrick Stewart's interpretation of him in the X-men movies was just perfect casting.

I find it amazing that fanboys can wail and gnash about any kind of minor continuity inconsistency and yet they swallow hook line and sinker the alleged reformation of one of mankind's greatest mass murderers.

I'm guessing that parents that send their teens off to private schools would have conniptions if they thought the teachers saw the kids as anything but minds yearning for knowledge. Outside of the school setting the age difference isn't as big a deal.
