I was getting in a constructive comic book argument with my friend the other day about how Xavier can control/ read minds and what not and my friend thinks behind it all Xavier is a manipulator. My friend thinks that Magneto is the good guy and Xavier is the bad guy.
So whose side are you on?

It would've worked fine if it had turned out to be a master scheme to lull his enemies into a false sense of security (such as in the Thomas/Adams run) but as a genuine conversion it doesn't hold any water, despite him being devolved and "resurrected without sin" in the Defenders.

In his previous appearance in #111-113, he was a total rat bastard, evil personified (this being after that Defenders issue). Then comes #150, and it's "oh my god, I hurt a little girl!". Completely inconsistent with how Magneto had been portrayed the previous 18 years of his comic book existence.

If I remember correctly, UXM #150 is where Magneto commits his worst crimes -- the sinking of a Russian submarine that kills all aboard, and destroying a Russian town with a volcano.

Chuck and Mag have the same goal, but one uses violence and terror to secure safety for Mutants. The other is passive and wants to welcome security through friendship. Reading about Mag and his back story of how he survived concentration camps, I can see where his hatred comes from.

If you read the captions, it states that Magneto allows the populace of the town to escape, while the actual fate of the sub is left a mystery (it's destruction isn't shown).

The OHOTMU page http://marvel.com/universe/Professor_X says he entered college at age 16 and graduated in two years at 18. At this point we no longer have exact numbers. He went to Oxford and met Moira MacTaggert. Let's say two years (he didn't finish). Assume one more year for the military. One more for meeting Gabrielle Haller and Magneto. Then finishing graduate studies at Columbia and psychiatry in London (add two years each, since he's a comic book genius). He then meets Jean prior to X-Men #1, at which point Jean is 10 and he's 26.

And who is all the while lying to you that he isn't a mutant, and who is manipulating everybody around him. At least with Magneto you pretty much knew what you were dealing with. Sorry, not buying it. I wouldn't recommend trusting Xavier *or* Magneto. If your justification for Xavier being a hero is that he isn't a terrorist, then that's a pretty low bar. (In fact, I almost qualify by those standards! )
