Yay for the hero who doth battle generic beasts. And Beta Ray Boob? Mighty Mjolnir can be wielded by a pokemon??!? Whosoever bought this Omniboo, if he hath brain cells, should try to convince omnipotent Shinobi100 of its merits.

I mean, okay, maybe the covers would look cool, theoretically, as pinups, but what about the fact that they weren’t conceived as pinups and they will each have twenty-five percent blank space at the top? Is that really a better look than including the logos would have been? And what about the fact that the logo on issue 337 was an integral part of the cover design? Why was the decision made to change that cover too? Was it so important that it match the rest of the logo-less covers that it was decided to fundamentally alter the composition of the image and change the artist’s intent? Why are these kinds of decisions made at all? is there one person in Marvel’s graphic design department who just arbitrarily makes these decisions based on his or her own taste, or are they put before more than one person? I know I’ll never get any kind of answer to these questions, and I certainly wouldn’t want o phrase these questions in an accusatory manner, but I would really love to know what the thinking was behind this seemingly arbitrary decision. And I’m not some luddite who won’t countenance any change whatsoever--I happen to think the drastic recoloring of the Tales of Asgard collection was a stroke of genius (it really hides Roussos’ faults as an inker, for one thing.) But this decision to eliminate all the cover logos just seems bizarre. If they kept the logo to 337 I could live with it, but the fact that they didn’t just makes it seem even more arbitrary. I wasn’t going to buy this omnibus anyway--it’s too damned big to read with comfort, and I have no need to own the Sal Buscema-drawn stuff toward the end--but I would still love to know the thinking behind the decision to dump the logos.
