Posts: 2891 Dec 21 09 3:11 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : creepy, eerie, warren, neal adams, gene colan, john severin, berni wrightson, jeff jones, esteban maroto, russ heath, reed crandall, wally wood, galonzo mayo, angelo torres, alex toth, rich corben, ramon torres, black cat, thrillkill, muck monster So how many Warren fans have already bailed on the Creepy and Eerie Archives from Dark Horse? Volume 3 of Creepy was my last one and volume 2 of Eerie. Dark Horse seems to be producing them fast and furious, perhaps hoping to get people to order them while they're still flushed with the contented glow of the first volumes. I wonder if there has been a massive decline in sales as many people were predicting (including myself). If they do continue, I don't anticipate picking anything up until Wrightson starts to put in an appearance. How likely are creator-centric volumes. Who would you like them to concentrate on first? The usual suspects are: Neal Adams Berni Wrightson Steve Ditko (although I think most of his stuff has already been reprinted in the Archives) Rich Corben (in colour!) Reed Crandall (ditto). Wally Wood (did he do enough for a whole Archive?) Jeff Jones (ditto) Russ Heath Alex Toth Gene Colan John Severin (is he marketable enough?) There are a few others, too, like Wood, Alex Nino, Infantino, and whoever it was who did those Mummy and Adam and Eve after-the-fall stories. As for bailing, I have temporarily bailed due to this nonsense of reprinting Creepy in Eerie and Eerie in Creepy or whatever it is. I judge each volume now on a case by case basis, following the credit and story listings in the Warren Companion. Because there is the stray story I would like to have by Sutton or whoever, I hope to find the ones I skip someday in a fantasy garage sale at $0.50 each or something...

Posts: 100 Dec 21 09 6:13 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Would definitely love to see some nice coffee table collections for John Severin/Russ Heath in the ilk of all the recent Ditko books. I know John has a lot of art in the recent DH Kull collection but I don't think there is much else out there? But its a darn shame that in these times that any collections for these gents are not guaranteed sellers, hopefully one the publishers out there will prove me wrong. Also added shame that we'll probably never ever see the work John Severin produced for Cracked magazine ever reprinted!

The art and stories in future vols will still probley be far superior to the Boris Karloff HC's ( which I also am enjoying ) Id also enjoy a HC collection of the Twilight Zone comics too. As ongoing titles, Creepy and Eerie had their ups and downs quality wise. The question is whether a reprint series of those titles will survive to reprint the periods where quality was pretty good, or get shut down when people lose interest in getting volumes from the eras where quality wasn't as high. Perhaps artist centric volumes would help avoid this problem. All of the above listed artists merit their own reprint volumes. As well as people like Tom Sutton, although I'm not sure if he did a lot of work for Warren outside of the Vampirella stories which are trademarked by another company. Also, I wonder who owns the rights to titles like The Goblin and The Rook. The Rook was a pretty solid title, which contained some very good artwork by Lee Elias, who is not a star artist but an entertaining artist in his own right. For completists only really, and, as I'm not one myself, I'll be skipping them.

So far, only Richard and I have answered unequivocally that we have abandoned buying them. Anyone else. Not that I'm advocating that course. I'm just curious about sale and their possible implications for the future of Warren Archives.

I would have bought the whole collection if they had been reasonable with those "weak" issues, ie not including the reprints from other titles, but since they are clearly clueless, I am officially out.

But honestly, I felt even the good stuff, story-wise, wasn't all that good. Art-wise, sure, the good stuff rocks...but the reproduction isn't really great. If they'd had the line-art quality of Russ Cochran's slipcased EC Library...this would've been a tuffer choice for me. As is, with shelves already getting stupidly full, and with mostly bad stuff to come for a while, this was an easy bail. Best Of collections or artist-centered collections would have been a better idea. I'm really not interested in all of it...I'm honestly really not that interested in MOST of it!

Posts: 1232 Dec 22 09 7:25 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I own Creepy Archives #1-3 and Eerie Archives #1-2 but won't be buying any more volumes until (or more likely, if) we get to the mid-70's era of Corben, Wrightson, Bruce Jones, etc. Obviously there was a huge drop-off in quality once Archie Goodwin and his stable of artists left Warren, but the decision to stop buying further volumes was easy once Dark Horse started including reprints of reprints. The inclusion of Eerie #1 I can accept (grudgingly) as a unique situation, but there's absolutely no excuse for any other reprints being included.

Unlike the Marvel and most of the DC books this Warren material is all new to me. I admit, the stories are getting a bit on the repetitive side but I so enjoy the Frazetta covers and the black & white art of Ditko, Neal Adams, etc etc. I'll probably get another volume of each title before I cry "enough!" Yeah, some of the material got weak in the last Creepy, but I don't see this as any different than my buying the Don Heck Avengers Masterworks to support them until i could get to the Thomas.Buscema/Adams stuff now. When you know more good is coming, it's easier to get through some bad.

Posts: 2891 Dec 25 09 12:10 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	One big difference for me compared with the Avengers or FF or Spidey is that there is no continuity or characters I have invested in, which makes it much easier to skip volumes because the creators involved are the only USP.
