Those books may seem to sell reasonably well (well enough that DC continues to publish them, at least), but at $20 retail, it isn't as if DC is making a great deal of money (see above), and every dollar spent producing them just thins out the margins a bit more.

I don't know, I used to believe DC when they told us "we are never going to do Essentials" and look at DC now...

I mean, i can't afford back issues of these series. I guess in Fine condition I might be able to get a couple here and there. But, Rex the Wonder Dog is even more expensive in back issues.

How is it so far-fetched when they seem to have no qualms about selling loads of 60s & 70s material (that also need color seps) at a $20 price point (Diana Prince, Phantom Zone, Kandor, DC Goes Ape, etc., etc.)?
Honestly, I imagine if it were profitable enough to do a Silver Age Superman Chronicle, it would be -far- more likely that they would make a bigger profit off a Silver Age Superman Archive -before- going to Silver Age Superman Chronicles.
I like to think that someday DC will decide on a digital format, and all of their old series will be available.

Well, for a start, books of that sort tend to be $19.99, not $14.99. (I misspoke about the price for the Chronicles books, as I said.) And even at that, when all is said and done, they're probably still not making all that much money off that format these days -- which might be why they seem to do only a handful of those types of books each year (and why, I think, DC's attention has slowly shifted away from this sort of material, compared to years past). And even at the higher price, I think the chances of anything like what the Chronicles series seems to represent for some people here -- a sequential issue-by-issue reprinting of a series -- seems unlikely. At best, I suppose there's the chance they might tap into material that's already been reprinted, as they have with Green Lantern (but even then, it probably isn't going to happen with, say, Doom Patrol or Metal Men). I just don't think 160 pages of new seps are a viable option at $14.99. That might have been the case a few years ago, but I don't think it is any longer. Maybe 160 pages of new seps is at least a reasonable option at $19.99, but DC seems more interested in using that format as a vehicle for "themed" collections with more general appeal. Honestly, I imagine if it were profitable enough to do a Silver Age Superman Chronicle, it would be -far- more likely that they would make a bigger profit off a Silver Age Superman Archive -before- going to Silver Age Superman Chronicles. Very probably. I like to think that someday DC will decide on a digital format, and all of their old series will be available. Quite honestly -- and even given what I know of DC's institutional reluctance and hesitation about digital distribution! -- I think that's more likely to happen sooner than any of the optimistic ideas proposed here.

Another point David and FFF statements that DC might make more money from a SA Archive then a color Showcase might have been true in the past, but right now Archives are not selling, low cost formats are popular and DC is adapting to the market.
I just don't see there being a significant difference in demand between say, a Phantom Zone book collecting stories from 1960-68, and a sequential volume culled from the same period. Besides which, the success of Showcases have shown that sequential SA collections sell, at the right price point.
