Well, as I've pointed out on the "Silver Age Library" thread, DC has been putting out softcover collections of 60s and 70s material with increasing frequency.
Some of these have been sequential in nature (Diana Prince, 70s All-Star, Nightwing & Flamebird), others have been themed anthologies (Greatest Imaginary Stories, Phantom Zone, Kandor, etc.). Most of these collections include material that is not on the archive radar screen.
Based on that trend, I wouldn't rule out the possibility of say, a Superman - Man of Tomorrow Chronicles or a 60s or 70s Batman chronicles, both of which would quickly outpace archived material. But I do agree that if they do go that route, it will be with very high profile characters - I wouldn't hold out much hope for Rip Hunter unfortunately.

The 60s/70s softcover collections must be doing well, as DC has upped the frequency - in fact it's the only avenue of their classic reprinting that is increasing at the moment. At the same time, I wouldn't be surprised if DC is re-evaluating the future of Silver Age archives. As the schedule stands, there will be over a year (and counting) between the Flash volume 5 and any potential new SA archive release next year. I don't recall their ever being such a prolonged drought like that, even back in the late 90s doldrums. While I continue to hope for the best for the HC lines, I'll ride the softcover wave for all it's worth if it gets us more Silver Age reprints.

I suspect that, if Archives are to survive in the near term, they will become loss leaders for the Chronicles...
For the Golden Age Chronicles, that may be true, but now that they're branching into Silver Age Chronicles, where the reproduction is not as costly, I wouldn't say that's a given necessarily.
