Not that I'm a fan of omni covers by more recent 'hot' artists, but I've always seen them as an homage of sorts - an attempt to connect the dots between books that might be seen as of more historic importance than appeal to contemporary audiences (not that I agree with this perception, of course). For example, I image a twenty-something comics fan in a store seeing, say, first Thor omni with the Oliver Coipel cover and thinking, "hmm... maybe the material isn't as dated (i.e. incongruent with contemporary comic book writing and art) as I thought. Coipel did the cover, and I loved him on House of M!"
