The lowest point in the series is easily the final five issues, after Day was taken off the book and Moench quit.  And issues #20-28 are pretty unexceptional too.  But when the series was good, it was pretty much unbeatable.

I have very dim memories of reading the last five issues of MOKF, and I agree that they're not nearly as good as the issues prior to that - which had gorgeous GD art.  That being said, I don't remember them being that bad.  IIRC, didn't at least 1-2 of these later issues have art by David Mazzuchelli?!  Mazzuchelli later went on to draw the amazing Daredevil: Born Again issues in the later '80's.

I compare Day's leaving MOKF to Frank Miller's leaving DD (Series 1) with issue #191.  It's not that the issues that came afterwards (with Klaus Janson art) were bad by any means - it's just that they weren't as good as the previous FM issues.  I.e., some artists are impossible to top....

Much as I love Day's work, it was Moench's departure that made those last few issues so bad. He had made those characters his own, and watching someone else try to write the book was analogous to watching Mantlo flail away at Howard the Duck.
