Or at the very least, the regular volumes make enough of a profit to cover the restoration costs that aren't covered enough by the sales of an Atlas or GA. 
I doubt very much that the upper management at Marvel (Perlmutter, specifically) would view the GA and AA Masterworks as being worthwhile unless they could turn a profit on their own.  For quite some time now, projects at Marvel generally have had to stand on their own and not rely on subsidies from other projects.  If each GA and AA MMW book nets -$X, and each MA MMW nets +$Y, Marvel will stick to only making projects that earn +$Y.  To mix in a few -$X projects lowers the total profit of the enterprise, and the total profit is certainly the name of the game for Perlmutter.
