It was an interesting period for Robinson.  You are right in that his writing on JUSTICE LEAGUE:  CRY FOR JUSTICE elicited a lot of criticism.  In some ways the POV/theme was no different than what Frank Miller regularly does, but it was obviously crafted with less art/skill -- and also with the pitfalls of 'in continuity'.  Regardless, Robinson was actually nominated for BEST WRITER in the Eisner Awards that year specifically for CRY FOR JUSTICE.

That grates on me to no end, because at the exact same time Robinson was part of a team (with Greg Rucka and Geoff Johns) who created the fresh Superman multi-title mega-story NEW KRYPTON that flawlessly unfolded weekly for about a year and a half.  THAT was great comics, and Robinson's work was notably strong there -- but NEW KRYPTON is criminally under-appreciated and he gets nominated for the hyperbolic CRY FOR JUSTICE?!?!?

... interesting ....

I had totally forgotten about that Eisner nomination, which must have been especially baffling for Robinson himself. I agree that his work on the Superman books was much better, and I think the whole New Krypton saga would lend itself really well to the omnibus treatment, despite the terribly rushed conclusion.
