Actually as soon as Sue realized she was under the influence and defeated Malice the costume was changed. No retcon. It was an actual storyline and it made sense.

That doesn't really answer the question I asked. Was it established from the time that the costume was introduced that it was a Malice manifestation, or did readers just find that out when Sue did?

Readers did not know exactly what was going on when the costume appeared but either right at the time or just before/after there were hints that Sue wasn't herself. I'm pretty sure other characters were also questioning why Sue was wearing that. Reed was presumed dead at the time so the reader and the characters were misdirected into thinking that Sue was just angry about Reed's "death." At least that's how I remember it from two readings.

The problem is that the Sue/Malice "s l u t" costume preceded a Reed "death" story. The obvious example being....

Unless that's supposed to be be some character other than Reed in the background.
It's been a few years.  Sue me.  Why don't you read the story for yourself?

BTW I just realized that the Paul Ryan costume mirrors Byrne's Malice costume with the boots/gloves; exposed rid-riff/cleavage/back; neck collar.  You can really see it on the cover to #384.
