Yes, that little sticker IS a theft prevention device, that is the thing that will set off the alarm if you try to walk out of the store without paying for your book.

It's not in EVERY book Barnes & Noble sells in their stores, but it does seem to show up in about one in three books.

It's placed on a random inside page so that potential thieves can't easily find and surreptitiously remove it.

... because yes, it IS easy to remove without damaging the paper, even from an interior page.

You must have gotten lucky or they have recently changed their security stickers - this is the main reason I stopped buying any books that didn't have plastic wrap from their stores.  Removing from an interior cover would usually leave a decent amount of residue that would stick to the closest page, and I didn't think it would be possible to remove from an interior page without ripping the thing.  The first time I came across one it was covering almost an entire panel.

I have never seen one of these on anything I ordered from B&N.com though.

I'd like to see in hardcover:
Avengers By Perez/Byrne (181-202)
Alpha Flight by John Byrne Omnibus
Excalibur by Claremont/Davis Omnibus Vol. 1

Shazam by Don Newton
