On a related note, it's well known that the Golden Age Captain Marvel's face was originally based on that of movie actor Fred MacMurray.

Like most people in my age group, my first exposure came to him as the doughy, middle-aged, befuddled father on My Three Sons, and the titular Absent-Minded Professor in the Disney films. At that time I was at a loss to figure how anyone would look at Fred MacMurray and decide that he could be a comic book hero.

I didn't realize until years later that back in 1940 MacMurray was a burly young leading man, perfect for the image of a superhero. I get a charge out of seeing how Alex Ross always draws a young MacMurray face on his version of Capt. Marvel.
