Why would a shop owner used a marked dime to start up his jukebox, and then later take that particular dime back from the coin box? Why does it matter which dime he took back?

Why indeed?  But then, given that this was a comic strip which routinely featured a parade of costumed criminals as dumb as a bag of hammers, pastel-colored space aliens, dimensional travel, a magical imp and talking animals, perhaps it's best not to over-think the material too much.

While I'm at it--on a different point that has confused me since I was a kid: Superman's key to the Fortress of Solitude being disguised as an airplane direction marker. Are there or were there ever such things as airplane direction markers in the arctic?

See above.

Guys, thanks for the comments about the jukeboxes--didn't occur to me that the owners of the cafes/sweet shops wouldn't also own the juke boxes.  That makes perfect sense, though--so naturally they would use marked coins so they could get back whatever they put into the machines.

Alizarin--maybe you should take your own advice re: the PSAs featuring UNICEF?   Wink
