While you're on the subject of Batman in 1963, here's a rarely seen piece that I don't believe has been posted on this site before. It's a four page article from
Screen Thrills Illustrated #4
cover dated
April 1963,
by Warren Publishing Company which traced the history of the character on the silver screen up to that time. Too young to have known about the earlier 1940s serials (and this was even before they were shown in select movie theaters as "camp" entertainment around 1965), I was stunned to see these images back in 1963. Just as surprising to me at the time was the cover of
Detective Comics #27
included,
which as far as I know was the first time that a reproduction of it had ever appeared in print:
Notice the cryptic last paragraph of the article, which mentions that although there had been interest in bringing Batman to the TV screen, no series was in actual production at the time. Interestingly, preliminary talks had espionage novelist Eric Ambler (who authored the book that the 1964 heist film
Topkapi
was based on) writing the script for a TV-movie that would launch a television series. The original concept was to make the show serious, but hip and fun similar to
The Man From U.N.C.L.E.
, but Ambler dropped out after learning that the producer was going to go in a very different direction.
