What I really liked, though, was the Elongated Man feature (and especially Infantino's art, when he inked himself).

I really didn't like the way the Elongated Man feature looked with Carmine Infantino inking himself. As a twelve year old at the time I wasn't aware of the concept of inking but I certainly wondered how and why the Elongated Man looked so good in the Flash while the Elongated Man stories looked so awful in Detective Comics.

For many years I was of the opinion that the only inker for Carmine Infantino was Murphy Anderson.  Now, however, I have to admit that those too few stories that Carmine was allowed to ink his own pencils are gems and I wish that he had been allowed to ink more of his own stuff although I do understand that back then his importance as a popular artist was such that Julie wanted him more for his drawings and allowing him to ink more would have reduced his output... and as a follow up to the Adam Strange debate the same thing happened when Carmine was replaced on the Flash by the team of Ross Andru and Mike Esposito.  Their style was perfect for the Metal Men and Wonder Woman and I also liked their war stories (especially with the dinosaurs) but it was ill-suited following in the steps of Infantino on the Flash.  Irv Novick did a very good job and maybe it was good that there was a sizable gap between when Infantino left and he took over otherwise back then we might have been complaining about his style being ill-suited as well.  Face it,  Carmine was a tough act to follow.
