There was an artistic reassignment within DC this month that didn't get much notice at the time, but perhaps should have...

Within the pages of Secret Hearts and Heart Throbs, there we was something different this month...

Each of them had a story with a delicate use of light and shading...

Yes, this was the work of Gentleman Gene Colan, who began his stint on DC romance comics in October 1963. He had done work before in romance for Atlas and other publishers, but this marked his first DC romance work.

I find it curious that Murray Boltinoff, who had assigned Colan to work on some of his anthology tales earlier in the year, let him slip away. You'd think he would have found something to put him to work on (as I've speculated before - a Colan Eclipso would have been a no-brainer IMO!).

Or, if you really want to think outside the box, how about if the powers that be decided to go in a completely different direction with the "New Look" Batman?

Of course, with DC's editorial fiefdoms and conservative nature, this just wasn't going to happen back then... but it's fun to imagine.

"As for contentment, that is a myth.  Give a man everything he wishes and he will be unhappy, because he didn't wish for more; give him more, and he will die of his worries.  Only a turtle, asleep on a sunny log, knows contentment!"
