My point is not that Timely was as big and prosperous as DC or All-American, but that the runs of its backup heroes werent as miniscule as it might seem.

Wow, great info Eric! I have to admit, some of the Timely superheroes had more exposure than I expected, although nowhere near as much as the Big 3.

I do have one problem, though, with the way you figure the appearances of the DC/All-American heroes and that is not including their All-Star appearances. For one thing, Timely had no similar title, and second, the way All-Star was set up, each JSA member had their own 8 page story in every issue. It was also one of the top selling titles of it's era. In fact, if I'm not mistaken, All-Star continued on well after the individual member's titles had been cancelled.

Unlike modern team books, where a particular character may only be shown in a few panels in a given story, All-Star was nothing more than a grouping of single character stories in the guise of a team book and I think those stories should be counted. It would add almost 50 appearances to the various members.

I've never read the SSoV Archives, so I don't know if they use the same format. If they do, those stories should be included as well.
