I believe he was speaking in absolute, not relative terms: the book's sales were good enough to warrant further investigation, but not good enough to be a sure-fire profitable project. But he didn't, as far as I know, ever see actual figures--that wasn't an editor's province. That would have been something Irwin Donenfeld, the Publisher, dealt with. He did say that the first three (and fifth) issues of Showcase had sold very, very poorly. So all this is, on my part, a general impression several times removed, based on a years' old recollection of things said by a man who was speaking of his own indirect impression of events that were then decades in the past.
