DCs hero books were driven by three properties, Superman (and Superboy by extension), Batman, and Wonder Woman. They survived because they were the first of their kind, and the successes that everyone else piggybacked off of.

DC's books survived because they were of really high quality, and also because their characters were much more important, from a pop culture perspective, than anyone elses. Superman had been in theatrical serials in 1948 and 1950, and started up on t.v. in 1952.

I really don't think it is any coincidence that the Timely revival started after the Superman t.v. showed that superheros could still be popular.

I think the Timely revival failed because Timely's stories weren't particularly fun. Captain America cheering nuclear explosions is a far cry from the Superman and Batman stories of that period.
