I only collect the TPBs now and I'm happy with the spines. The paperback line was what brought me back into collecting the Masterworks after three radically-different cover designs, mapping changes, and ever-increasing prices had turned me away. Now the collection looks uniform and best of all I can buy three or four paperbacks for the price of one HC.
I recently comic-boxed up my original "marbles" and Pop Arts so now I only have the TPBs on the shelf, along with a few silver-and-black HCs (which I'll be boxing up when they're eventually all replaced by TPBs), and it looks great. That Marvel "logo" change a while back didn't bother me when it happened. I just shook my head, sighed, and said, "Figures ... but it could have been worse. Much worse." Fortunately, the
"MARVEL"
isn't as noticeable on the paperbacks as it is on the hardcovers. On the HCs it is slightly overbearing, taking up a full quarter of the spine; on the TPBs it has been reduced to 1/5th of the spine. Good move for the paperbacks right there, they look much more streamline.
The only time I felt even
minutely
irked about the spines it had nothing to do with
design
changes but rather with the "content" (if that's the right word) on them. You see, the paperbacks have those teensy-weensy character pictures at the very bottom of the spines. Now, normally I don't even notice them at all--they really only serve to add a tiny splash of color to the scheme--but for the X-Men run I would have bet big money that with 1. Cyclops, 2. Angel, 3. Marvel Girl, and 4. Iceman, the Beast was logically destined for Vol. 5. The volume had his origin story in it, too, so I figured it was a no-brainer to sport Hank on 5 and Professor X on 6. Six Silver Age volumes, six original X-Men, right?
Imagine my surprise when Polaris of all people turned up! Was Marvel thinking Sterenko fans would only snatch up the volume based on spotting that micro-chip-sized bit of art? LOL Anyway, I suppose an Neal Adam's Havoc will be stuck on Vol. 6 now, leaving Hank and Xavier SOL Silver Age wise. Poor under-appreciated, clean-shaven, non-blue, Stars and Garters-less Hank. LOL I figure that if the Beast is to be used now, it will indeed be the gray or blue-furred version on volume 7, but I won't be buying that one. Again, it's such a minor thing that I don't normally even think about or notice, but that's my "pet peeve." That said, keep up the good work Cory and Friends!
