I actually can imagine Marvel producing Masterworks softcovers that far ahead, but who knows if they will follow the HC schedule exactly. It's possible by then that the demand won't be enough to justify a new HC print run, so softcovers might be the only option.


If it gets to the point where publishing hardcover Masterworks is no longer a sustainable proposition, I doubt we'll see a transition to another format for new-to-reprint material. It's the margins on the hardcover format (which are disproportionately better) that, in many cases -- not all, but many -- make it possible to keep publishing for the smaller audience. Even if you took the naive and optimistic view that everyone who had been buying these books in hardcover would continue to do so in paperback, the problem is you still have all of the production costs with (at best) only about half the revenue to support them.
