I didn't realize it at the time, but that late '80s-early '90s cast really was special. I was at that age where I started rebelling against things I used to like, so for some reason I was determined to find fault with SNL, with Dana Carvey bearing the brunt of my ire. Granted, he was over-exposed on that show, but he was still much more talented than I was willing to acknowledge at the time. It's crazy that he never went on to much after that. I think turning down Letterman's old job at Late Night was probably a big mistake for him, though I understand why he did it.

I agree, Season 1 is very weak, and they still haven't hit their stride even in Season 2. I'm looking forward to starting Season 3 soon to get to the good stuff. And I'm baffled as to why Chevy was the breakout star, when Belushi and Radner are so much more interesting in those first two seasons.

The current cast is odd, in that it has one foot in the past, and one foot in the future. As much as I like Hader, Sudeikis, Armisen, et al., I'd be fine with most of them moving on to make way for newer cast members.

Actually coming up with a strong opening skit once in a while would be nice, too. It's supposed to be the moment when they comment on the biggest news story of the week, and they consistently botch it.
